Open Access costs

In many cases you can comply with HEFCE’s and other funders’ Open Access requirements without paying a fee, by uploading your Accepted Manuscript in Pure.

The University has grants from RCUK, the Wellcome Trust and other charities to support their Open Access policies. Please note as of 1 Nov 2017 we will no longer be able to pay APCs for RCUK articles via the ‘gold’ route in hybrid (subscriptions-based) journals.

If your publisher does not permit you to deposit a peer-reviewed version of your paper in a repository within an acceptable embargo period, you can choose ‘gold’ Open Access to comply with these policies.

To claim Article Processing Charges (APCs) from our RCUK or Charity Open Access Fund, send the following details to openaccess@st-andrews.ac.uk

  • Your name, School and email address
  • Journal and publisher
  • Article title, manuscript ID or DOI
  • Funder name and external Grant ID

The Library has a small fund available to support the University’s Open Access Policy, available for fully Open Access journals only where the author has no other source of funds.

For other funders such as EU (Horizon 2020) you should include the costs of Open Access in your grant.
